Located in south Brevard County along the Indian River, Malabar is a family-oriented community with rural neighborhoods of single-family and manufactured homes. Residents keep busy with outdoor activities, and enjoy fishing, boating, and hunting or just relaxing in the peaceful and quiet surroundings of Malabar Scrub Sanctuary, a 345-acre nature preserve developed to help protect one of Brevard County's endangered bird species along with providing a preserve for many other animal and plant species. The town of Malabar is one of the oldest communities in Brevard and was formally recognized as a community in 1883, when the United States Postal Service established a post office where mail could be delivered once a week by sailboat to the population of 25. Malabar is also the home of the Yellow Dog Café, one of the better known restaurants in the county and provides a fine dining experience with a spectacular view of the Indian River.
