Moving Checklist

5 weeks before move
Moving: Contact moving companies for estimates and information.  Tip: book well in advance as key times of the year can be very busy.
Documents: Make an inventory of everything to be moved.
Moving: Start working your way through each room taking inventory and deciding what to get rid of.  Start planning a yard sale or contact your local charities.
Moving: Contact the charity for date/time of pickup.  Save receipts for tax records.
Packing: Get cartons and packing materials to start packing now, unless you have  packing services.
Moving: Check with employer to find out what moving expenses they will pay.
Moving: Budget for moving expenses and start collecting estimates.
Services: Contact insurance agent to transfer/cancel insurance coverage.
Services: Contact broker in new community to set up utility turn-on date.

4 weeks before move (Moving from out of country)
Documents: Make sure your passport is current and valid.  If you do not have one, be sure to get one well in advance.
Documents: Contact the consulate for the country you are moving to ensure that you have all proper paperwork prepared and available.
Services: Research the financial situation in your new country.  Open a new bank account and change your currency if necessary.
Services: Research insurance options in your new country.  Your present insurance may or may not be valid after you move and you may need to buy new insurance in your new country.
4 weeks before move
Services: Contact a real estate agent in your new locale/country so that they may begin to search for your new home or rental property.
Moving: Check and make inventory of all furniture for dents and scratches, notify moving company of your inventory and compare on final day.
Services: Organize your finances and look into potential tax benefits of your destination location.
Services: Cancel or transfer mobile and telephone numbers, as well as internet connection services.
Services: Cancel all newspapers, garden service, snow removal, etc.

3 weeks before move
Services: Schedule disconnection of all utility services at your old home, and connection of them at your new one.  Also check for refund of deposit.
Services: Dry clean/launder clothes to be moved, pack in protective wrappers.
Moving: Make hotel and airline reservations if you need them.
Moving: Collect everything you have loaned out and return everything you have borrowed.
Documents: Start pulling together medical and dental records - including prescriptions and shot records.
Documents: Get children's school records.
Documents: Check with veterinarian for pet records and immunizations.  Find out what is the procedure if traveling by plane with pets.

2 weeks before move
Moving: Have automobile serviced for trip.  If you are not taking your car with you but are renting, then find a car rental agency at your new destination.
Moving: Remove all jewelry and other valuables to a safe deposit box or other safe place to prevent loss during move.
Services: Transfer or close checking and/or savings accounts, as well as credit cards.
Packing: Check into storage options for those items you cannot move immediately and may need to store temporarily.
Packing: Contact a company that deals specifically in shipping excess baggage.
Documents: Make backup copies of important files on your computer before packing it up.
Services: Find a cleaning service that will do a final clean of your home.
Services: Notify friends and family of your new address and phone number.
Services: Check your home insurance - make sure you have cover from the day you move in to your new home.

1 week before move
Services: Visit the post office and arrange for your post to be forwarded or visit their online services.
Moving: If you have children or pets, arrange for someone to look after them during the packing and loading of the truck.
Packing: Pack a separate carton for cleaning materials and tools.
Packing: Separate cartons and luggage you need for personal travel.
Packing: Pack a suitcase with the clothes and toiletries you will need the first day in your new home.
Packing: Pack a special box with other essentials you will need for the first few days.  (Make sure to mark this box "Do Not Move").
Moving: Organize at least one room in the house for packers and movers to work freely.
Moving: Review the entire list to make certain that you have not overlooked anything.  Check and double-check everything you have done before it is too late.

Moving week
Moving: Plan to spend the entire day at the house.  Last minute decisions must be made by you.  Do not leave until after the movers have gone.
Moving: Stay with the moving van driver to oversee inventory.
Packing: Tell packers and/or driver about fragile or precious items.
Moving: Make a final check of the entire house - basement, closets, shelves, attic, garage, and every room.
Moving: Double check with driver to make certain moving company records show the proper delivery address for your new house.  Verify the scheduled delivery date, too.
Moving: Give driver phone numbers both here and in new community to contact you in case of a problem.
Moving: Lock all doors and windows.  Advise your realtor and neighbors that the house is empty.
